The Bab-el-Mandeb is a narrow path of water.

It sits between Yemen and the Horn of Africa. This area includes the countries of Djibouti and Eritrea. The strait connects the Red Sea to the Gulf of Aden. This path helps ships reach the Indian Ocean.

This place is a major global chokepoint. A chokepoint is a narrow route used by many ships. Most oil and gas from the Persian Gulf pass through here. In 2018, about 6.2 million barrels of oil moved through every day. If this path closed, ships would have to sail around Africa. That would take much more time and cost more money.

An island called Perim sits in the middle.

It splits the water into two channels. One channel is wide and deep. The other is much smaller.

Many countries watch this water to keep ships safe. Some countries have military bases in Djibouti. Groups in Yemen have also caused trouble for ships in the Red Sea. Because of this, many nations work together to protect the route.
