Mount Kilimanjaro is a very big mountain.

Mount Kilimanjaro is a huge volcano.
The mountain has three parts. One part is a large cone named Kibo. Kibo is the highest part.
There are green forests on the slopes. Some parts are very wet and cloudy. Many special plants grow there.
A big cap of ice sits on top. This ice is melting fast. Most of the ice was lost recently.
People love to hike here. There are seven paths to the top. It is a very famous place to climb.
Mount Kilimanjaro is a large volcano in Tanzania.
The mountain has three main parts. They are Kibo, Mawenzi, and Shira. Kibo is the largest cone. It is also the highest part.
Many different things live on the slopes. There are green forests and cloudy forests. Some special plants grow only here. A large cap of ice sits on the top. This ice is melting very fast. Over 80% of the ice was lost in the 1900s. People from all over the world come to hike here. There are seven paths to reach the high peak.
Mount Kilimanjaro is a huge, dormant volcano in Tanzania.

The mountain was formed by volcanic activity over 2 million years ago. It is part of the East African Rift. Kilimanjaro has three different volcanic cones. The first is Shira, which is the lowest and is extinct. The second is Mawenzi, which is also extinct. The third and largest is Kibo.
People have lived near the mountain for a long time. The Chagga Kingdoms lived on the eastern and southern slopes. Their rule ended in 1963 when Julius Nyerere took over. We do not know exactly where the name Kilimanjaro comes from. Some think it means "mountain of greatness." Others think it means "unclimbable."
Kilimanjaro has many different environments on its slopes. You can find montane forests and cloud forests there. Some plants, like the giant groundsel, grow only on this mountain. The mountain also has a large ice cap. This cap includes the Rebmann, Furtwängler, and Credner glaciers.
Today, Kilimanjaro is a famous place for hikers and climbers. It is known as one of the Seven Summits. There are seven different established routes to reach Uhuru Peak.
Mount Kilimanjaro is a massive dormant stratovolcano located in Tanzania.

The mountain is a product of volcanic activity that began over 2 million years ago. It is one of several mountains rising from the East African Rift. Kilimanjaro is composed of three distinct volcanic cones. The first is Shira, which is the lowest of the three. Shira is an extinct volcano that features a broad high plain at 3,962 meters. The second cone is Mawenzi, which is also extinct. Mawenzi is characterized by a horseshoe-shaped ridge with jagged pinnacles. The third and largest cone is Kibo. Kibo is a dormant volcano, meaning it is not currently erupting but could erupt again. Its highest point is Uhuru Peak, located on the crater rim.
The geological history of Kibo is complex. The last major activity occurred between 150,000 and 200,000 years ago. This activity created the current summit crater. Within this crater lies the Inner Cone, and inside that is the Reusch Crater. The Reusch Crater contains the Ash Pit, which is 300 meters deep. Kibo also features over 250 parasitic cones on its flanks. These smaller cones were formed between 150,000 and 200,000 years ago. They erupted different types of lava, such as picrobasalts and trachybasalts. These cones reach as far as Lake Chala in the southeast.
The name "Kilimanjaro" has a disputed origin. The Chagga people, who lived on the southern and eastern slopes, call the peaks Kipoo and Kimawenze. In the Kichagga language, these names mean "spotted" and "broken top." Some researchers believe "Kilimanjaro" comes from the Kichagga words for "unclimbable." Others suggest it has Swahili roots. One theory suggests "kilima" means mountain, though some argue it is a diminutive meaning "hill." Another Swahili theory suggests the name means "mountain of greatness" or "mountain of caravans." In 1885, explorer Joseph Thomson suggested it might mean "white mountain."
European discovery and exploration changed how the world saw the mountain. German missionary Johannes Rebmann is credited as the first European to report its existence in 1848. In 1889, Hans Meyer became the first person to reach the highest summit on Kibo. He originally named the summit Kaiser-Wilhelm-Spitze. After the formation of Tanzania in 1964, the summit was renamed Uhuru Peak. This name means "Freedom Peak" in Swahili. In 1973, the area was incorporated into Kilimanjaro National Park to protect it.
Kilimanjaro hosts diverse ecosystems across its different elevations. The lower slopes contain montane forests and cloud forests. Many species are endemic, meaning they are found nowhere else. An example is the giant groundsel, known scientifically as Dendrosenecio kilimanjari. The mountain also possesses a large ice cap with Africa's largest glaciers. These include the Credner, Furtwängler, and Rebmann glaciers.

Today, Kilimanjaro is a world-famous destination for hiking and climbing. It is recognized as one of the Seven Summits. There are seven established routes used to reach Uhuru Peak. While the climb is not as technically difficult as some other mountains, it is still serious. The extreme prominence of the mountain creates a high risk of altitude sickness. This occurs because the air becomes much thinner at such high elevations. Travelers from all over the world come to experience its unique landscape and challenge.
