The Rwenzori Mountains are a special range in eastern equatorial Africa. They sit right on the border between Uganda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

This range is famous because it is the highest non-volcanic mountain range in the world. It is not made by volcanoes or the usual way mountains form. Instead, a huge block of rock was pushed upward about three million years ago. This uplift was so big that it helped create three great African lakes. These are Lake Albert, Lake Edward, and Lake George.

The mountains are made of six main parts called massifs. These parts are separated by very deep gaps known as gorges. One of these massifs is Mount Stanley, which holds the highest point. This peak is called Margherita Peak.

Other famous mountains in the range include Mount Speke and Mount Baker. There are also Mount Emin, Mount Gessi, and Mount Luigi di Savoia. The range is very long and wide. It contains parts of the Virunga National Park and the Rwenzori Mountains National Park.

Long ago, people called these the "Mountains of the Moon." A Greek scholar named Ptolemy said they were the source of the Nile River. European explorers began visiting the area in the late 1800s. Samuel Baker saw them in 1864 and called them the "Blue Mountains." Later, Henry M. Stanley visited and used the name "Ruwenzori." In 1906, the Duke of Abruzzi led a big expedition there. He climbed the highest peaks and named many of them.

The plants in the Rwenzori are very unusual. They live in five different zones. These zones go from green rainforests to snowy areas called the nival zone. Some plants, like giant lobelia and giant groundsels, grow to be very large.

These plants have to deal with freezing nights and hot days. They use special insulation to keep their water safe and stay warm. Because the mountains are so unique, they are now a World Heritage Site.

Today, the mountains are changing because the world is getting warmer. The glaciers, which are large fields of ice, are melting. In 1906, there were forty-three named glaciers in the range. By 2005, less than half of those were still there.

This range is highly significant because it is the highest non-volcanic, non-orogenic mountain range in the world. This means the mountains were not formed by volcanic activity or standard tectonic mountain-building processes. Instead, they formed about three million years ago during the late Pliocene epoch. The range is a massive uplifted block of crystalline rocks. These rocks include gneiss, amphibolite, granite, and quartzite. This geological uplift was so powerful that it divided the paleolake Obweruka. This event helped create three of the African Great Lakes: Lake Albert, Lake Edward, and Lake George.

The range is composed of six distinct massifs. These large mountain blocks are separated by deep, steep-walled gorges. The six massifs are Mount Stanley, Mount Speke, Mount Baker, Mount Emin, Mount Gessi, and Mount Luigi di Savoia. Mount Stanley is the most prominent massif in the range. It contains several subsidiary summits. The highest point in the entire range is Margherita Peak, located on Mount Stanley.

The mountains are organized into five overlapping vegetation zones. These zones are defined by their elevation and the types of plants that live there. They include the evergreen forest zone, the bamboo zone, the heather zone, the alpine zone, and the nival zone, which is the zone of snow.

Plants in the Rwenzori have developed incredible adaptations to survive. The vegetation ranges from tropical rainforests to alpine meadows and permanent snow. Some species, like giant lobelia and giant groundsels, reach unusually large sizes. These plants must manage a very difficult water economy. Although there is no water shortage, water is not always available when plants need it most. Nightly frosts can affect sap transport and root water intake. When the sun rises, temperatures and radiation levels increase very rapidly. This puts heavy demand on the plants through a process called transpiration. To survive, these afro-alpine plants use insulation systems to protect themselves from freezing.

History has often linked these mountains to ancient legends. In antiquity, the Greek scholar Ptolemy described them as the legendary "Mountains of the Moon." He believed they were the source of the Nile River. European explorers began documenting the range in the late nineteenth century. Samuel Baker reported seeing the "Blue Mountains" in 1864. Henry M. During his 1906 expedition, the photographer Vittorio Sella captured vital images. Sella had visited the mountains before. His photographs of the glaciers and moraines provided early evidence of change. They showed that the glaciers were already in a state of retreat. Today, his photographic work is preserved in several institutions. These include the Museo Nazionale della Montagna and the Istituto di Fotografia Alpina Vittorio Sella in Italy. The Makerere University in Uganda also holds a selection of his images. These records help scientists track how the mountains have changed over a century.

Climate change is currently having a major impact on the Rwenzori glaciers. In 1906, there were forty-three named glaciers across the six mountains. These glaciers covered an area of 40 square kilometers. This was about half of the total glacier area in all of Africa. By 2005, the situation had changed significantly. Less than half of those glaciers remained. They were found on only three mountains. The total area had shrunk to 12 square kilometers.

Scientists like Richard Taylor have studied this retreat. They investigate how the loss of ice affects local biodiversity and vegetation.

Modern technology is helping researchers understand this rapid environmental shift. In 2025, Project Pressure used drones and GPS coordinates to create the world's first 3D model of the Ugandan glaciers. This model focused on the glaciers of Mount Stanley. Their findings showed that the Stanley Plateau glacier surface area fell by 29.5% between 2020 and 2024. During these drone surveys, researchers even discovered an accessible ice cave. As the temperatures rise and the ice recedes, the vegetation is slowly moving to higher elevations. This shifting landscape connects the geology, biology, and climate of the entire region.
