Mount Merapi is a very busy volcano in Indonesia.

It sits on the border of Central Java and Yogyakarta. This volcano is the most active one in all of Indonesia. Its name comes from two old words. Meru means mountain in Sanskrit. Api means fire in Javanese. This makes the name mean "Mountain of Fire."

Many people live on the sides of the mountain. Some villages are very high up. This makes the volcano a very important place to study. Scientists call it a "Decade Volcano" because it is so close to many people.

This volcano works because of how the Earth moves underneath. It sits on a subduction zone. This is where the Indo-Australian plate moves under the Sunda plate. This movement creates the heat and pressure for eruptions.

For a long time, the lava was a different kind. About 400,000 years ago, the eruptions were mostly effusive. This means the lava flowed out smoothly. Now, the eruptions are more explosive. They often create lava domes. When these domes fall, they create very dangerous clouds.

History shows that Merapi has been active for a very long time. Some people believe a huge eruption in the year 1006 covered all of central Java in ash. This event might have even helped end the Hindu Kingdom of Mataram.

Many other big eruptions happened in 1786, 1822, 1872, and 1930. The eruption in 1930 was very bad. It destroyed thirteen villages. Sadly, 1,400 people died in that event. The volcano has been erupting regularly since at least 1548. It is one of at least 129 active volcanoes in the country.

Recent years have seen many big events at the mountain.

In 2010, a massive eruption occurred. It killed 353 people. It also forced 350,000 people to flee their homes. This happened because of pyroclastic flows. These are fast, hot clouds of gas and rock. Local people call these flows "wedhus gembel." This Javanese name means "shaggy goat." In 2018, a phreatic eruption happened. This is an eruption caused by water and heat. It sent smoke up to 1,500 meters high.

Today, experts watch the volcano very closely. They use many tools to track its movements.

They look for things like earthquakes and ground bulges. In 2021, the volcano sent ash clouds as far as 3.5 kilometers away. In 2024, it had eruptions in January too. These events remind us how powerful the Earth can be. Scientists study these small and large eruptions to keep people safe. They want to understand how the mountain changes over time.
