From then until 10,000 years ago, eruptions were typically effusive. This means the basaltic lava flowed out smoothly. Since then, eruptions have become more explosive. They often involve viscous andesitic lavas. These thick lavas create lava domes on the volcano. When these domes collapse, they generate dangerous pyroclastic flows. Large explosions can also cause column collapse, which creates more flows.



Recent eruptions have caused great impact on the local population. In 2010, a major eruption occurred on the southern and southeastern slopes. This event killed 353 people. It also forced 350,000 people to flee their homes. Pyroclastic flows caused most of the damage. Heavy rain on November 4 also created lahars, which are mudflows.
