Mount Merapi is a highly active stratovolcano in Indonesia.

It sits on the border of Central Java and the Special Region of Yogyakarta. This volcano is the most active in the entire country. Its name is a compound of two words. Meru is the Sanskrit word for mountain. Api is the Javanese word for fire. Together, the name translates to "Mountain of Fire."

Because it is so close to many people, it is a very important site for study. It is designated as one of the Decade Volcanoes. These are volcanoes chosen for study because they are destructive and near large populations.

The volcano forms due to tectonic plate movements. Merapi is located at a subduction zone. This is where the Indo-Australian plate moves under the Sunda plate. This process is part of the Pacific Ring of Fire. This is a section of fault lines stretching through the Western Hemisphere and Asia. Merapi is the youngest volcano in a group in southern Java. It is one of at least 129 active volcanoes in Indonesia. The movement of these plates creates the pressure that leads to eruptions.

Geological history shows that Merapi's behavior has changed over time. Stratigraphic analysis shows eruptions began about 400,000 years ago. From then until 10,000 years ago, eruptions were typically effusive. This means the basaltic lava flowed out smoothly. Since then, eruptions have become more explosive. They often involve viscous andesitic lavas. These thick lavas create lava domes on the volcano. When these domes collapse, they generate dangerous pyroclastic flows. Large explosions can also cause column collapse, which creates more flows.

Scientists monitor the volcano using many tools. They look for signs of an imminent eruption. For example, they watch for increased seismicity, which means more earthquakes. They also look for a bulge in the volcano's cone. In April 2006, a bulge and regular tremors indicated an eruption was coming. In September 2010, observers saw lava dome inflation. The inflation rate increased from background levels to 10 meters per day. These measurements help authorities decide when to evacuate people.

Merapi has a long history of significant eruptions. Some believe a massive eruption in 1006 covered central Java in ash. This may have caused the collapse of the Hindu Kingdom of Mataram. Other notable eruptions occurred in 1786, 1822, 1872, and 1930. The 1930 eruption was especially deadly. It destroyed thirteen villages and killed 1,400 people via pyroclastic flows.

The volcano has erupted regularly since at least 1548.

Recent eruptions have caused great impact on the local population. In 2010, a major eruption occurred on the southern and southeastern slopes. This event killed 353 people. It also forced 350,000 people to flee their homes. Pyroclastic flows caused most of the damage. Heavy rain on November 4 also created lahars, which are mudflows.

Local people call the pyroclastic flows "wedhus gembel," meaning "shaggy goat." In 2018, a phreatic eruption occurred. This was caused by rainfall and internal activity. It sent smoke up to 1,500 meters high.

Merapi continues to show activity in recent years. In 2021, explosions sent ash clouds 3.5 kilometers away. In 2023, a lava flow reached 7 kilometers long. In January 2024, six pyroclastic flows reached 2 kilometers. These events show why volcanologists stay interested in the mountain. The volcano's shape even changed during the 2010 eruptions. Its height was lowered during that time. Monitoring these changes helps keep the 2.4 million people near Yogyakarta safer.
