Galeras is a highly active stratovolcano located in the Nariño department of Colombia.

It sits near the city of Pasto, which has a population of approximately 450,000 people. A stratovolcano is a large mountain built by many layers of material. Galeras is currently the most active volcano in Colombia. Because of its frequent eruptions and its proximity to many people, it is a major focus for geological study. In 1991, it was designated as a Decade Volcano. This means it was chosen for detailed study by the United Nations' International Decade for Natural Disaster Reduction.

The volcano operates through explosive activity centered around a main vent. These explosions can trigger dangerous events like pyroclastic flows or lahars. A pyroclastic flow is a fast-moving cloud of hot gas and volcanic matter. A lahar is a type of volcanic mudflow that travels down the slopes. Sometimes, the volcano releases large columns of ash and gas into the atmosphere. For example, in July 2006, an ash column reached an altitude of 10 kilometers. Scientists monitor these processes to understand the risks to nearby communities.

Geologists have studied the long history of Galeras to understand its structure. The volcano has been active for at least one million years. Its primary material is a rock called andesite. Long ago, two massive caldera-forming eruptions changed the shape of the mountain. A caldera is a large crater formed when a volcano collapses inward. The first major collapse occurred about 560,000 years ago. The second happened between 40,000 and 150,000 years ago. Today, a smaller cone has grown inside the horseshoe-shaped caldera left behind by these events.

Recording the history of Galeras shows how often it erupts. The first historical eruption was recorded on December 7, 1580. Since then, many eruptions have been documented throughout the centuries. During the Holocene epoch, activity has been dated back to 7050 BC. There have been many eruptions in the 1800s and 1900s. In the 20th century alone, eruptions occurred in 1923, 1924, 1932, 1936, 1947, 1950, 1974, 1989, 1990, and 1993. Even in early 2010, the volcano erupted ten times within just twelve months.

One of the most significant and tragic events occurred in January 1993. During a Decade Volcano conference in Pasto, a group of scientists went to the crater. They wanted to sample gases and take gravity measurements. They hoped these tasks would help them predict future eruptions. However, an eruption happened unexpectedly while they were at the summit. The event killed six scientists and three tourists. This tragedy highlighted the extreme dangers of volcanic research and the difficulty of making perfect predictions.

Scientists use specific tools to look for signs of upcoming activity. One reliable precursor is a low-frequency seismic event called a tornillo event. These are small tremors that can be detected by a seismograph, which is a machine that records ground shakes. Tornillo events have occurred before about four-fifths of the explosions at Galeras. The number of these events can also help scientists estimate the size of the next eruption. Other scientists use the Deep Earth Carbon Degassing Project to monitor the volcano's activity.

Volcanic activity has a direct impact on the lives of people in Nariño. In November 2005, an eruption forced 9,400 people to evacuate their villages. When ash falls on the city of Pasto, residents must wear goggles and face masks to breathe safely. In 2009, ash emissions were so heavy that local authorities had to shut down two water treatment plants. In 2006, the Colombian government ordered evacuations for over 8,500 people living in high-risk areas. These events show how closely the local population must live with the power of the volcano.
