Dacite is a special kind of volcanic rock. It forms when lava cools down very quickly.

This rock sits in the middle of two other rocks called andesite and rhyolite. It is mostly made of two minerals: quartz and plagioclase feldspar.

Scientists look at the amount of silica in the rock to study it. Silica is a main ingredient that makes the rock what it is. This rock is very important for understanding how the Earth's crust grows over time.

There is a specific way that dacite forms deep underground. It usually starts when one tectonic plate slides under another plate.

This process is called subduction. As the plate sinks, it carries water and minerals down with it. This causes the rock to melt and turn into magma. The magma then travels upward toward the surface. As it rises, it changes and becomes rich in silica and sodium. Finally, the magma reaches the cold surface and hardens into dacite.

We know a lot about this rock because of history. The name dacite comes from Dacia.

Dacia was a Roman province located between the Danube River and the Carpathian Mountains. Today, that area is part of Romania and Moldova. Two Austrian geologists named Franz Ritter von Hauer and Guido Stache first wrote about it. They used the name in a book called Geologie Siebenbürgens. They wanted to show how it was different from other rocks.

Scientists use different measurements to identify dacite. One way is to look at the minerals inside.

A dacite rock usually has between 20% and 60% quartz. It also has a lot of plagioclase feldspar. Sometimes, the crystals are too small to see with just your eyes. In those cases, scientists measure the chemical parts instead. They look at the levels of silica and alkali metal oxides. This helps them place the rock in the correct category.

Finding dacite can lead to some very big events. Because the magma is thick, it can cause explosive eruptions.

Mount St. Helens is a famous place where dacite formed domes. You can find dacite in many places on Earth, like Japan and Iceland. It is even found on the planet Mars! It exists in the Nili Patera caldera on Mars. This shows us that the same kinds of rocks can form on other worlds too.
