Glass fiber is made of many very thin glass strings.

People have tried to make these for a long time. In 1893, a man named Edward Libbey showed a dress made with glass fibers. These fibers were as thin as silk.

Today, we make glass fiber in a special way. First, we melt glass in a very hot furnace. Then, we push the liquid glass through tiny holes. This part of the machine is called a bushing. The bushing is made of a strong metal called platinum.

As the hot glass falls from the holes, it pulls into long threads.

We use different kinds of glass for different jobs. E-glass is the most common type. It is used to make many plastic parts. S-glass is a type made for extra strength. It is used to build planes and large buildings. Some glass fiber is made to trap air. This is called glass wool. It helps keep buildings warm by acting as insulation. Glass fiber is great for making boats and pipes. It is strong and stays safe in many environments.
