Rolling the molten gather on the marver creates a cool exterior skin.
There are two primary methods of glassblowing: free-blowing and mold-blowing. Free-blowing was the dominant method from the middle of the 1st century BC until the late 19th century. In this method, the worker blows short puffs of air into a "gather" of molten glass. This creates an elastic interior skin that matches the exterior skin formed by cooling. The glassworker then shapes the mass using tools like jacks, which look like large tweezers, or wooden blocks. An incredible example of this technique is the Roman-period Portland Vase.
Mold-blowing emerged later, during the first part of the second quarter of the 1st century AD. This method involves inflating molten glass into a carved wooden or metal mold. The mold determines the shape and texture of the glass rather than the blower's hand movements. Makers use single-piece molds for simple items like tableware. For more complex designs, they use multi-piece molds made of several segments. Metal molds, such as those made of bronze, are particularly effective at creating high-relief designs. This technique allowed for the mass production and widespread distribution of glass objects. 
Modern glassblowing requires a precise sequence of heating and cooling using three different furnaces. First, the glass is melted in a furnace at approximately 1100°C, where it appears white-hot. After the glass "fines out" to remove bubbles, the temperature is lowered to about 1000°C for working. The glassblower then uses a "glory hole" to reheat the piece between shaping steps. Finally, the glass must undergo annealing in a furnace called a lehr. This process cools the glass slowly over hours or even days. Slow cooling prevents the glass from cracking due to thermal stress.
Artisans use various specialized tools to achieve specific shapes and decorations. A punty, or pontil, is an iron rod used to attach to the glass for transferring it from the blowpipe. Blocks made of water-soaked fruitwood help shape the piece, while paddles create flat surfaces like bottoms. For decoration, workers may use cane, which are colored glass rods, or frit, which is powdered color. Some advanced techniques, like reticello, involve twisting two bubbles of cane in different directions.
