Oil paint is a special kind of paint. It uses a drying oil to hold color.

Most artists use linseed oil. This oil comes from the flax plant. Other oils come from poppy or walnut seeds.

This paint dries very slowly. This is a great help to artists. They can mix colors right on the canvas. They can also fix mistakes easily.

Old paintings were made by hand. Artists had to grind color bits into oil. This took a lot of work. In 1841, a man named John Goffe Rand made metal tubes.

These tubes let artists take paint outside. They could paint in the sun. This helped many new styles of art grow.

Oil paint is also very strong. It is waterproof. This makes it good for protecting wood and metal. It can even be used on ships. Some artists add wax to the mix. This keeps the paint from turning dark.
