He helped start a style called early Netherlandish painting. This was a key part of the Northern Renaissance. Along with Jan van Eyck, he changed how artists saw the world. People used his art to feel closer to religious stories. His work was highly valued by cities and churches. He was a leader who helped move art toward a more real look.

Campin used a special way to make his paintings look life-like. Before him, many artists used egg-based paints called tempera. Campin was one of the first to use oil-based colors instead. This new method allowed for much brighter and richer colors. He used light and shade to make his figures look strong. This technique helped him show rounded shapes and deep details. By using these oils, he could create very realistic scenes.

Historians have spent many years studying who Campin really was. For a long time, some of his works were linked to a person called the "Master of Flémalle." This name came from three religious panels once thought to be from an abbey in Flémalle. Now, most scholars believe the Master of Flémalle was actually Robert Campin. It is hard to be certain because he did not sign his name. We know he was a successful painter by the early 1400s. His fame grew as he worked in the city of Tournai.

Campin lived and worked in Tournai, which is in Belgium today. He was active there as early as 1406. By 1410, he had become a full citizen of the city. He was a very busy man who ran a large, profitable workshop. He even served as a leader in the guild of goldsmiths and painters. Between 1426 and 1428, he taught several apprentices in his studio. Two of his students, Jacques Daret and Rogier van der Weyden, became masters themselves. He lived a full life and died in Tournai in 1444.

His famous Mérode Altarpiece is a great example of his skill. An altarpiece is a painting often used in churches, sometimes with three panels called a triptych.

This specific work shows the Angel Gabriel visiting Mary in a home. It is full of tiny, loving details that look very real. You can see how he used his new oil skills to paint everyday objects. This style of painting connects to the way we see art today. It showed that even small, quiet moments could be beautiful and important.
