He is remembered as a founder of the Antwerp school of painting. This group of artists became the leading school in Flanders during the 16th century. Matsys was known for his many different styles and skills. He could paint deep religious feelings or use humor to comment on society. His work helped bring new life to Flemish art. People still value his ability to show both beauty and human truth.

His paintings often focus on tiny, careful details.

Matsys used bright, glowing colors and clear outlines. He spent a lot of time painting the texture of jewelry and the edges of clothing. He was also a master at showing emotions on faces. Some of his characters look very calm and holy. Other characters show strong feelings like greed, despair, or even funny grimaces. He used these details to tell stories about how people behave.

Many stories tell of his early life in Leuven.

He was born to Joost Matsys and Catherine van Kincken around 1466. Legend says he was an ironsmith before he became a painter. Some say he switched jobs to impress a woman. Others believe he started painting because he was too sick to work at the smithy. He likely decorated prints for carnival celebrations during that time. Historians believe he received formal training, even if the records are hard to find.

Matsys lived and worked in Antwerp for over twenty years.

He became a master in the Antwerp guild of painters in 1491. During his career, he taught several apprentices, such as Willem Muelenbroec. He also likely influenced the artist Joachim Patinir. Matsys created famous works like "The Money Changer and His Wife" in 1514. He died in Antwerp in 1530. A special plaque was later placed on the Antwerp Cathedral to honor him.

His art has left a mark on many other famous things.

One of his most famous paintings is "A Grotesque Old Woman." This piece was actually used as a model for a character in "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland." His son, Jan Matsys, also became an artist. His grandson, Quentin Metsys the Younger, even painted for the English court. Today, his paintings are kept in great museums around the world. You can see his work in places like the Louvre and the Prado Museum.
