He was a painter, a sculptor, and a poet. He helped lead two important art movements called Dada and Surrealism. These groups wanted to try new and unexpected ideas. Ernst did not have formal training in art school. Instead, he used an experimental attitude to find new ways to create. He often mixed strange or funny shapes with other styles. This made his work very unique and interesting to look at.

Ernst invented several clever ways to make his art. One way was called frottage, which is a pencil rubbing of bumpy objects. He would place paper over a textured surface and rub it with a pencil. Another way was called grattage, which means scraping paint across a canvas. This revealed shapes from objects hidden underneath the paint.

He also loved making collages. This is when an artist puts different pieces of paper together to make a new picture. These methods helped him create images that felt like dreams.

His journey as an artist began a long time ago. He was born in Brühl, Germany, in 1891. In 1909, he started painting while studying at the University of Bonn. He studied many things like history, art, and even psychology. In 1911, he joined a group of artists called Die Rheinischen Expressionisten. He was also inspired by famous artists like Vincent van Gogh and Pablo Picasso. Even though he loved art, his life was interrupted by World War I. He served as a soldier for four years, which was a very hard time for him.

Ernst's life moved through many different places and events. He lived in Cologne, Paris, and even traveled to Saigon, Vietnam.

During World War II, he had to leave Europe and move to the United States. He lived in the red rocks of Sedona, Arizona, from 1946 to 1953. This desert landscape inspired him to finish his sculpture called Capricorn. He later moved back to France and became very successful. In 1954, he won a big award called the Grand Prize for painting at the Venice Biennale.

Many things in Ernst's life showed up in his art. He had a great fascination with birds. He often painted a bird character named Loplop, which was like a second version of himself.
