Postmodernist film

arts Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Some movies play by very different rules. We call these postmodernist films. They do not follow old ways of telling a story. Instead, they like to surprise the viewer.

One way they do this is by mixing styles. They might mix "high art" with "low art." For example, a movie might show a famous painting. But it might add a silly detail to it. This can bridge the gap between serious art and fun things.

These films also use something called intertextuality. This is a big word. It means characters talk about other stories. They might even know they are in a movie! This reminds you that the film is just a made thing.

Time can also feel strange in these films. They often tell stories out of order. One movie is called Pulp Fiction. It tells different stories that weave together. It also uses styles from many different years. Another film is Blade Runner. It mixes science fiction with a dark, old style called noir. These movies love to break boundaries and mix ideas together.
