Modern art

arts Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Modern art is a way of making art that changed how people see the world. It covers a long period from the 1860s to the 1970s. During this time, artists decided to try many new experiments. They often moved away from old traditions and storytelling. Instead, they focused on abstraction, which uses shapes and colors. This era was about fresh ideas and new materials. It allowed people to express feelings in ways never seen before.

Artists used many different ways to create their work. Some painters, called Impressionists, wanted to capture natural light. They often painted outdoors, or "en plein air," instead of in studios. Other groups, like the Fauves, used very bright and wild colors. Some artists used collage, which means they added different textures and surfaces to a piece. Cubist artists like Pablo Picasso used basic shapes to build images. They looked at nature as a collection of cubes, spheres, and cones. This helped them build a brand new way of seeing.

Modern art grew from many different ideas over a long time. Some people say it began in 1863 with Édouard Manet. He showed a famous painting called "Le déjeuner sur l'herbe" in Paris. Other historians look at earlier dates, like 1784 or 1855. Many believe the movement was a gradual change over a hundred years. It was influenced by things like Japanese printmaking and the French Revolution. These events helped people think about art in a new, self-conscious way.

Many famous names helped shape these different art movements. Vincent van Gogh and Paul Cézanne were important Post-Impressionists. In the early 1900s, Henri Matisse led the Fauvist movement with colorful paintings. Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque worked together to develop Cubism. In Germany, artists like Wassily Kandinsky helped start Expressionism. In Italy, the Futurists celebrated speed and new technology. Even after World War II, the United States became a major center for art. Many new styles like Pop art and Video art appeared during this time.

Modern art connects to many things we see in our world today. It led to contemporary art, which is the art made right now. It also changed how we think about design and architecture. Groups like the Bauhaus school showed how art and buildings work together. Even the way we use video and technology in art comes from these ideas. Modern art teaches us that there is no single way to create. It encourages everyone to look at the world with curiosity and wonder.
