Neoclassicism was a major trend in twentieth-century music.

Many composers felt that music had become too messy or emotional. They called for a "call to order" to fix this. They wanted music to feel balanced, clear, and calm. This style focused on order and restraint instead of wild feelings. It was a way to find structure again. This helped musicians move past the experimental years of the early 1900s.

To make this music, composers used specific tools and methods. They often used smaller groups of instruments to play. They focused heavily on steady rhythms and complex patterns. This style also used updated versions of old harmonies. Many artists preferred absolute music, which is music made for its own sake. They did not always try to tell a specific story through the sounds. Instead, they focused on the beauty of the musical form itself.

This style looked backward to find new ideas. Composers drew inspiration from the eighteenth century. Some also used the Baroque period, which is sometimes called neo-Baroque music. Even before the 1900s, some artists began this trend. For example, Franz Liszt wrote music in 1862 that felt like the past. Sergei Prokofiev wrote a symphony in 1917 that was a precursor to the movement. These artists used old styles to create new, thoughtful sounds.

Different countries developed their own versions of this music.

In France, Igor Stravinsky was a very important leader. He wrote the ballet *Pulcinella* around 1920 using old themes. In Germany, Paul Hindemith created a style with many layers of sound. He wrote the famous work *Mathis der Maler*. In Spain, Manuel de Falla wrote a concerto in 1926. He even used tunes from the fifteenth century in his music. These different paths helped the style grow across the world.

Neoclassicism spread quickly because of great teachers and students. Nadia Boulanger was a famous teacher in France. She taught over 600 musicians around the globe. Her students included many famous names like Aaron Copland. In South America, composers like Alberto Ginastera used these forms in Argentina. Even in Brazil, Heitor Villa-Lobos used Baroque styles in his works. This shows how one idea can touch many different cultures.
