He held citizenship in France and the United States during his life. Stravinsky is widely recognized as a pivotal figure in modernist music. This means he helped lead the way into new, experimental musical styles. His work changed how composers approached rhythm and musical form. In 1998, Time magazine named him one of the 100 most influential people of the 20th century.

Stravinsky’s musical journey began in a family deeply connected to the arts.

His father, Fyodor, was a bass singer at the Mariinsky Theater. His mother, Anna, was an amateur singer and pianist. Although his parents expected him to study law at the University of Saint Petersburg, Stravinsky pursued music privately. He studied piano and theory from a young age. While at university, he met the famous composer Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov.

Rimsky-Korsakov became his mentor and advised him on his compositions. This mentorship provided the foundation for his future success.

Stravinsky's career is categorized into three distinct stylistic periods. His Russian period lasted from 1913 to 1920. During this time, he drew heavily from Russian folklore and folk poetry.

He integrated these folk elements with popular musical forms like the tango and ragtime. His second phase was the neoclassical period, which lasted from 1920 to 1951. In this era, he utilized classical techniques and themes from Greek mythology. His final phase was the serial period, spanning from 1954 to 1968. During this time, he adopted the twelve-tone technique used by the Second Viennese School.

In the serial period, Stravinsky moved toward highly structured mathematical methods. The twelve-tone technique involves organizing musical notes into a specific sequence.

His composition In Memoriam Dylan Thomas (1954) was his first work fully based on this method. Shortly after, his 1956 work became his first to utilize a specific tone row. These changes were often surprising to his supporters. However, later music historians viewed this versatility as a vital part of his legacy. He proved that a composer could master many different musical languages.

Stravinsky gained international fame through his collaborations with the impresario Sergei Diaghilev.

Diaghilev commissioned Stravinsky to write ballets for the Ballets Russes in Paris. This led to the creation of The Firebird in 1910 and Petrushka in 1911. His 1913 ballet, The Rite of Spring, was particularly revolutionary.

The work's avant-garde nature was so intense that it caused a near-riot at its premiere. This piece fundamentally changed how composers understood rhythmic structure. It pushed music toward a more complex and unpredictable future.

His personal life was also marked by significant relationships and changes. He married his first cousin, Yekaterina Nosenko, in 1906.

They had two children, Théodore and Ludmila. Stravinsky's life involved moving between several countries due to his work and citizenship. He eventually settled in the United States. His last major work, Requiem Canticles, was composed in 1966. This piece was even performed at his funeral. He died of pulmonary edema in New York City on April 6, 1971.

Stravinsky's influence extends far beyond his own compositions. His revolutionary ideas challenged many other famous composers to innovate.

Musicians such as Aaron Copland, Philip Glass, Béla Bartók, and Pierre Boulez were all influenced by him. They were encouraged to explore music beyond traditional tonality. They specifically looked at new ways to use rhythm and musical form. Stravinsky remains a central figure in the study of modern musical evolution. His ability to reinvent himself helped shape the sound of the modern world.
