He lived during the late Russian Romantic period. This was a time of great, emotional music. Glazunov was born in Saint Petersburg to a wealthy family. His father, Konstantin, was part of the nobility. Alexander began playing the piano when he was nine years old. By the age of eleven, he was already writing his own music. A famous musician named Mily Balakirev noticed his talent early on. Balakirev showed Glazunov's work to the teacher Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov. Rimsky-Korsakov was very impressed by the young boy's skill.

Glazunov's musical journey grew very quickly. Rimsky-Korsakov became his teacher and private mentor. The teacher noted that Glazunov improved every single hour.

A wealthy man named Mitrofan Belyayev also supported him. Belyayev helped Glazunov travel to Western Europe in 1884. During this trip, Glazunov met the famous composer Liszt in Weimar. Belyayev even paid for an orchestra to play Glazunov's First Symphony. This support helped start the Russian Symphony Concerts in 1886. Glazunov also joined an advisory council to help other young composers. This group of musicians became known as the Belyayev circle.

As he grew older, Glazunov became a leader in the music world. He was elected director of the Saint Petersburg Conservatory in 1905. He led the school through many years of big changes. He helped reorganize the school as it changed names. It was first the Saint Petersburg Conservatory, then the Petrograd Conservatory. Later, it became the Leningrad Conservatory. Glazunov worked hard to make the school better for everyone. He created an opera studio and a student orchestra. He even looked after students who needed extra help. One of his most famous students was Dmitri Shostakovich.

He wrote eight complete symphonies and left a ninth unfinished. Some of his most popular pieces are his ballets. These include "The Seasons" and "Raymonda." He also wrote a beautiful Violin Concerto. In 1934, he wrote a special piece for the saxophone. Glazunov's music combined many different styles together. He used Russian folk songs and grand, epic sounds. He also used the smooth, lyrical style of Tchaikovsky. This made his music feel both Russian and international.

In his later years, Glazunov traveled to many different countries. He conducted music in Paris, England, and the United States. He moved to Paris in 1929 and stayed there. He died in 1936 at the age of 70. Even though he lived far from Russia, he was still respected. He told people he stayed away because of his health. His music remains important to people all over the world. Many orchestras still perform his symphonies and concertos today. His life shows how a young talent can become a great leader.
