He wrote many kinds of art. He wrote poems, plays, and stories. Some of his work was for adults. Much of it was for children. He wrote for many popular magazines. People loved his stories for kids.

Kharms liked to do things in a new way. He was part of a group called Oberiu. This was a group of real art makers. They did not follow normal rules. His writing was often strange and silly. It felt like a dream. His stories were very short. They might only be a few paragraphs long.

He had a unique style. He often dressed like a fine English gentleman. He even used a special pipe.

Kharms lived through a very hard time in Russia. He was arrested by the government. He died in 1942 during a siege in Leningrad. His friends saved his notebooks from the war. They hid them so they would not be lost. Because of them, people can read his work today. Many people now translate his stories into English.
