He was part of a group called the Acmeists. These writers made a new style of poetry. In 1913, he published his first book. It was called "The Stone."

Osip wrote a poem about the Soviet leader, Joseph Stalin. This poem was an insult. Because of this, the police arrested him in 1934. His wife, Nadezhda, went with him into exile. They lived in a place called Voronezh. During this time, he wrote the "Voronezh Notebooks."

Later, Osip was arrested a second time. He was sent to a labor camp in the Far East.

His health became very poor. He died in a transit camp in 1938.

Nadezhda worked very hard to save his work. She memorized his poems so they would not be lost. She also hid his papers from the police. Because of her, we can still read his beautiful poems today.
