He wrote mostly in a language called Braj Bhasha. Before his time, people saw this as a very simple language. Most books were written in Sanskrit or Persian instead. Surdas changed this by using Braj Bhasha for his art. His skill helped make it a real language for literature. He also wrote some poems in a dialect called Awadhi. This helped many people connect with his beautiful words.

Many stories tell us about his life and his faith. Some say he was born in 1258 in Uttar Pradesh. Others say he lived from 1483 to 1563. He belonged to a Brahmin family. One tradition says he was a student of a man named Vallabha. This group is known as the Vallabha Sampradāya. He was the most important of the Ashtachap. This name means "Eight Seals" in Hindi.

His most famous book is called the Sur Sagar. This name means "Ocean of Sur." It is a huge collection of many poems. The book is often split into twelve parts. It is similar to a holy book called the Bhagavata Purana. Many poems in the book are called pads. These are short songs with six to ten rhyming verses. They often describe Krishna as a lovely child in the region of Gokul.

Surdas wrote about more than just Krishna. He also wrote poems about Rama and Sita. He wrote about Vishnu and Shiva too. He even wrote about his own spiritual struggles. His life has been so interesting that many films were made about him. Movies like "Surdas" came out in 1939. Other films tell stories of the legend Bilwamangala. These movies help keep his memory alive for many people today.
