Tukaram is best known for his special poems. These poems are called abhanga. They are written in the Marathi language. Many people in Maharashtra still sing them today.

Tukaram used his poems to talk about important ideas. He spoke about social reform. This means he wanted to make society better and fairer. He taught that caste does not matter to God. He believed all people should be treated equally.

He even accepted followers who were women.

He also loved kirtan. Kirtan is a way to pray by singing and dancing in a group. He thought this helped people grow closer to God. Some people in his time did not like his ideas. They even treated him unkindly. But his message stayed strong. His poems are collected in a large group called the Abhanga Gatha.
