For a long time, people did not write this language. They kept it alive by memory. They learned the holy words by heart. This is called an oral tradition. Later, people made a special way to write it. This writing is called the Avestan alphabet. It has 53 different signs. People write from right to left.

The name Avestan comes from a book called the Avesta. This name might mean a song of praise. The language has two main parts. One part is called Old Avestan. The other part is called Young Avestan. Old Avestan is much older. It is very similar to a language called Vedic Sanskrit.

We do not know exactly where the speakers lived. Some maps suggest they lived in the east. This area includes parts of modern Afghanistan and Tajikistan. They may have lived in parts of Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan too. Even though the language is no longer spoken, it is still very important. It helps people keep their sacred traditions alive today.
