Somali is a major Afroasiatic language within the Cushitic branch. It serves as a vital tool for communication across the Horn of Africa and the global diaspora. As of 2021, approximately 24 million people speak the language. About 17 million of these speakers live in Somalia. Somali is the most widely spoken Cushitic language in its region. It is an official language in Somalia and Ethiopia. It also serves as a major national language in Djibouti. In Kenya, it is recognized as a minority language.

The language is categorized as Lowland East Cushitic. This places it alongside languages like Afar and Saho. Somali is the best-documented language in the Cushitic group. Academic studies of its structure date back to the late 19th century. The language has grown significantly due to population movements. For example, southward movements over the last ten centuries spread Northern Somali. The Somali Civil War in the early 1990s also expanded the diaspora. This created new speech communities in Europe, North America, and the Middle East.

Writing Somali has involved many different systems over time. While the Latin alphabet is the official script, others have been used. The Arabic script is used informally by some. There are also unique Somali scripts like Osmanya, Kaddare, and the Borama script.

In 1972, the Supreme Revolutionary Council adopted the Latin orthography. This decision changed how the language was used in administration and education. The government-appointed Somali Language Committee helped prepare for this transition. Following this, the language became the main medium for academic instruction. It eventually expanded to cover all 12 forms of schooling by 1979.

Somali speech is divided into three primary dialectal groups. The first is Northern Somali, which forms the basis for Standard Somali. This group is subdivided into Northern Somali proper, the Darod group, and the Lower Juba group. The Isaaq dialect of Northern Somali holds high prestige.

The second group is Benadir, also called Coastal Somali. It is spoken along the central Indian Ocean coast, including Mogadishu. The third group is Maay, spoken mainly by the Digil and Mirifle clans. Maay is partially mutually comprehensible with Northern Somali. Some linguists compare the difference between Maay and Standard Somali to Spanish and Portuguese.

The sounds of Somali are quite complex. The language contains 22 consonant phonemes. It also features five core vowel articulations. These vowels can be short or long. They also involve a process called vowel harmony. In this process, vowels within a word must match each other.

There is also a debate among scholars about its pitch. Some argue Somali is a tonal language. Others suggest it is actually a pitch accent system. The syllable structure usually follows a (C)V(C) pattern. This means a syllable can have a consonant, a vowel, or both.

Grammatically, Somali is an agglutinative language. This means it uses affixes to mark tense, case, and aspect. It also shows properties of inflection. Somali uses two different sets of pronouns. There are independent pronouns, which act like nouns, and clitic pronouns, which attach to verbs. The language also features polarity of gender. This means plural nouns often take the opposite gender of their singular forms. For instance, the masculine word for bull, dibi, becomes feminine in its plural form. The language is also characterized as a subject–object–verb (SOV) language.

Today, many institutions work to support and preserve the language. The Regional Somali Language Academy was established in 2013. This intergovernmental body includes Djibouti, Somalia, and Ethiopia. Its mandate is to preserve the Somali language for future generations. Somali is widely used in modern media. Radio Mogadishu has broadcast in the language since 1951. Other networks like Somaliland National TV and Puntland TV also air programs. In digital spaces, Somali is one of only three Cushitic languages on Google Translate.
