This language grew from the Vulgar Latin used in the Roman Empire. It is very close to Latin, especially when compared to Sardinian. Today, between 68 and 85 million people speak it.

About 64 million of these speakers are native speakers. Italian is an official language in several places. These include Italy, San Marino, Vatican City, and parts of Switzerland. It also has official minority status in countries like Croatia and Slovenia. Many people also speak it in Brazil and parts of Europe like Malta and Albania.

Learning how Italian sounds is quite interesting.

Most native Italian words end with a vowel. The language uses a system of seven different vowel sounds. It also has a special way of using consonants. Some consonants are short, while others are long. This is called gemination, or doubling the consonant sound.

These features give the language a very distinct rhythm. This rhythm helps it stand out in the many languages of Europe.

The history of Italian is a very long story.

It began to change after the Western Roman Empire fell in the 5th century. During the Middle Ages, Latin was the main written language. However, people spoke local versions called dialects. These local tongues were like sister languages to Italian. One very old example is the Veronese Riddle from the 8th or 9th century.

Another early piece of writing is the Placiti Cassinesi from the years 960 to 963. These texts show how the language was slowly moving away from Latin.

A famous poet named Dante Alighieri helped make Italian what it is today.

He lived during the Middle Ages and wrote in his native Florentine. His most famous work is an epic poem called the Divine Comedy. Because so many people read his poems, his way of writing became a standard. This helped educated people across the peninsula understand each other.

Later, the printing press helped spread the language even faster. By the year 1500, Italy had 56 printing presses. This was more than any other place in Europe at that time. This technology made books cheaper and easier to find for everyone.

Italian is connected to many things we see in our daily lives.
