Imagine a massive family of voices spread across the globe. These are the Romance languages, also called Neo-Latin languages. They all come from one single ancestor called Vulgar Latin.

This ancestor was the everyday way people spoke in the Roman Empire. Today, these languages are vital for millions of people. They help neighbors talk and help different nations work together. Over 900 million people speak them as their first language.

Learning how these languages spread is like tracing a long path. In the 15th century, European colonialism began to change the world. This movement carried languages like Spanish and Portuguese to new lands.

Because of this, Romance languages are found in the Americas and Africa. They are not just in Europe anymore. Some languages even became official in places like the Philippines or Timor-Leste. This history shows how speech can travel across huge oceans.

Many different groups make up this language family. Scientists group them into branches like Ibero-Romance or Gallo-Romance.

For example, Spanish and Portuguese belong to the Ibero-Romance group. French is part of the Gallo-Romance group. There are also Eastern Romance languages like Romanian. It is sometimes hard to draw lines between them. This is because speech often changes slowly from one town to the next.

Some Romance languages are much larger than others. Spanish is the biggest with 489 million native speakers. It is the main language in Spain and much of Hispanic America.

Portuguese has 240 million speakers and is huge in Brazil. French has 80 million native speakers and is official in many countries. Italian has 67 million speakers, mostly in Italy. Romanian is spoken by 25 million people in Romania and Moldova. All five of these major languages are official in the European Union.

These languages connect us to the past and the present. They are used in big groups like the United Nations. Spanish and French are even official languages there. Even if you do not speak them, you might hear them used as a lingua franca. This means people use them to talk to others who speak different tongues. They are living pieces of history that people still use every single day. They keep the spirit of ancient Rome alive in modern life.
