Romansh is a beautiful Romance language spoken in the mountains of Switzerland. It belongs to the Gallo-Romance branch of languages. This means it is a relative of French and Italian. People speak it mostly in the Swiss canton of Grisons.

Romansh is a very important part of Swiss identity. It has been a national language of Switzerland since 1938. Since 1996, it has also been an official language for government business. It is used in schools to teach children in many areas.

Learning how Romansh works shows its deep history. The language grew from Vulgar Latin, which was the spoken tongue of the Roman Empire. By the 5th century AD, Latin began replacing the older Celtic and Raetic languages in this region.

Romansh still keeps a few words from those very old languages. Over many centuries, the language also changed because of contact with German. This contact changed how many words are used and how sentences are built. One special feature is how it uses vowels in words.

Writing in Romansh has a long story. The earliest known writing in the language is from the 10th or 11th century. However, major books and works did not appear until the 16th century. During this time, different regional ways of writing began to grow.

In the 1800s, the number of speakers began to drop. This happened because of industrialization in Switzerland. To help, people started a literary movement. They worked hard to save their language through books and stories.

Romansh is not just one single way of speaking. It is divided into five different regional groups called idioms. These are Sursilvan, Sutsilvan, Surmiran, Putèr, and Vallader.

Sursilvan is the most widely spoken variety. Sutsilvan is the least widely spoken of the five. Because these groups live in different valleys, they can be hard to understand. A person speaking Sursilvan might not understand someone speaking Ladin at first. In 1982, a new version called Rumantsch Grischun was created to help everyone communicate.

Today, many people still cherish this language. In the year 2000, about 35,095 people said Romansh was their best language. By 2019, data showed that 40,074 Swiss residents primarily spoke it.

In the canton of Grisons, about 14.7% of people used it as their main language in 2017. Even though the language has changed over time, it remains a strong part of life. It links the modern world to the ancient Roman past. People continue to use it in their homes, schools, and even on road signs.
