There are five main ways to speak Romansh. These are called idioms. They include Sursilvan, Sutsilvan, Surmiran, Putèr, and Vallader. Each one has its own way of being written.

Some idioms are more common than others. Sursilvan is the most widely spoken. Sutsilvan is the least widely spoken.

In 1982, people made a new way to write. They call this Rumantsch Grischun. It was made so people from all areas could use one style.

In the past, the number of speakers went down. This happened as the country grew. But people started a movement to save it. They wrote books and stories to keep the language strong.
