Latvian has a long history. It first appeared in print in the mid-1500s.

Early writers used it for hymns and books. In the 1800s, a group called the "Young Latvians" helped the language grow. They made it a standard way to write. Today, people even hold contests for new words. They pick a "Best word" and a "Worst word" each year.

There are three main dialects, or ways of speaking. These are the Livonic, Central, and High Latvian dialects.

The Central dialect is the basis for the standard language. The Livonic dialect comes from people who once spoke the Livonian language. Latvian is a proud part of life in Latvia.
