In this country, people use three official languages: Luxembourgish, German, and French. While it is related to German, Luxembourgish is its own independent language. It belongs to the West Central German group. This means it is a Moselle Franconian language.

Many people in Luxembourg use it every day. About 77% of residents can speak it. It is the main language for 48% of the population.

Learning how to write Luxembourgish involves following specific rules. For a long time, there was no official way to spell words.

In 1946, a system called "OLO" was used. This system let people write words how they sounded. Later, experts worked on a big dictionary project from 1950 to 1977. This work helped create the official spelling used today. The current rules were updated again in 1999. The alphabet uses 26 Latin letters. It also uses three special marks called diacritics. These marks help show the right sounds for vowels.

History shows that Luxembourgish has been around for a very long time. One of the oldest known texts is a long poem.

This poem is called the Codex Mariendalensis. It has nearly 6,000 lines about a woman named Yolanda of Vianden. This text was written in the 13th century. People found it in 1999 at Ansembourg Castle. For many years, people thought it was just a German dialect. After World War II, the language changed to become a standard form. It developed its own unique grammar and vocabulary.

There are many different ways to speak the language. These local versions are called dialects.

Some dialects come from the north or the east. Others come from the south or the center. There are specific names for these, like Stater or Minetter. People in different towns may even use different words in small villages. Because people move around more now, a "Standard Luxembourgish" is growing. This happens through radio and television. This process helps people from different areas understand each other better.

Luxembourgish connects to many other parts of Europe. It is spoken in parts of Belgium and France.

It is even spoken by some descendants of immigrants in the United States and Canada. The language has many words taken from French. This can make it different from other German dialects. Some people work hard to keep the language strong. For example, the ADR political party wants to protect it. They even want it to be an official language of the European Union. This shows how much people value their unique way of speaking.
