Most Italians speak Italian, which is a Romance language. This language grew from Vulgar Latin many years ago. Some people in Italy also speak regional languages. There are about 30 such languages in the country. These languages are often called dialects, but they are actually unique languages.

Many Italians also feel a strong bond to their specific local towns or regions.

The history of Italy began with many different tribes. The Romans were one of the most famous groups.

They grew into a very strong power. By 218 BCE, the Latins ruled much of the peninsula. Rome eventually conquered islands like Sicily, Sardinia, and Corsica. In 88 BCE, Rome gave citizenship to many Italic peoples. This helped bring different groups together under one rule. Later, the Roman Empire changed many times through wars and new leaders.

Cities like Venice, Florence, and Genoa grew rich through trade. These cities became famous centers for banking and art. This special time was called the Renaissance. It led to amazing discoveries in science, music, and literature.

Italian explorers also traveled to far-off places during the Age of Discovery.

Christopher Columbus sailed to the New World. Another explorer, Amerigo Vespucci, showed that the New World was a new continent.

Because of him, we call the Americas by that name. John Cabot was the first European to reach Newfoundland. Giovanni da Verrazzano also explored the Atlantic coast of North America. These voyages connected different parts of the world together.

Today, Italians live all over the globe. This happened because many people moved away after major wars.
