Albanian is a unique Indo-European language with a distinct lineage. It is the only surviving member of the Albanoid branch. This branch belongs to the larger Paleo-Balkan group.

Because it stands alone, its exact origins remain a subject of much discussion. Many historians believe Albanian descends from ancient Illyrian. This theory is based on geographic and historical patterns. However, linguists cannot prove this connection definitively. We know almost nothing about the Illyrian language itself, making it linguistically untestable.

The language is divided into two primary dialect groups. These are known as Gheg and Tosk. The Shkumbin River in central Albania serves as the rough boundary between them. Gheg is spoken to the north of the river. Tosk is spoken to the south.

These dialects differ mainly in their phonology, which refers to the way sounds are produced. For example, Tosk shows a feature called rhotacism in certain words. This is seen in the Tosk word "murgu" for monk, compared to the Gheg "mungu." This split likely occurred after the region became Christianized in the fourth century AD. It probably happened no later than the sixth century AD.

Standard Albanian serves as the official version of the language. It is primarily based on the Tosk dialect. This standard form allows for clear communication across different regions. The language holds official status in Albania and Kosovo. It is also a co-official language in North Macedonia and Montenegro. In these areas, it serves significant Albanian minority communities. In North Macedonia, it officially became a co-official language on January 15, 2019. This standardization helps maintain unity among speakers who may use different sub-dialects.

Written records of Albanian provide a window into its long history. The first written mention of the language occurred in 1284. This was found in a witness testimony from the Republic of Ragusa. In 1332, a Dominican Friar named Gulielmus Adea wrote a letter. He noted that Albanians used the Latin alphabet for their writing.

The oldest surviving attestation of modern Albanian dates to 1462. Because Albanian was the last Indo-European branch to appear in written records, its early history remains shrouded in mystery. These documents show the gradual development of the language into its modern form.

Today, the Albanian language has an estimated 7.5 million native speakers worldwide. This total is much higher than the number of speakers living in the Balkans alone. While about 6 million people speak it in the Balkan region, the global diaspora adds millions more.

In Greece, there are approximately 450,000 Albanian speakers. In Italy, Albanian is the third most common mother tongue among foreign residents. Switzerland also has a large community, where it is the sixth most spoken language with 176,293 native speakers. These figures illustrate the massive global footprint of the language.

Large Albanian-speaking communities exist across several continents, known as a diaspora. In the Americas, there are significant populations in the United States, Canada, Argentina, Chile, and Uruguay. In the United States and Canada, there are about 250,000 speakers. Many reside on the East Coast in cities like New York City and Boston. In Argentina, nearly 40,000 speakers live mostly in Buenos Aires. Other historical communities include the Arbëreshë in southern Italy. They speak an archaic version of the Tosk dialect called Arbëresh.

These groups have preserved unique elements of the language for centuries.

Albanian also has historical connections to other regions and cultures. In Turkey, an estimated 1.3 million people have Albanian ancestry. While many have assimilated, a vibrant community maintains its identity in Istanbul. In Egypt, there are about 18,000 Albanians, many of whom are descendants of the Janissary of Muhammad Ali Pasha. This leader established a dynasty and part of the former Egyptian aristocracy was of Albanian origin. From the Balkans to Oceania, the language connects people to a shared heritage. It remains a vital part of the identity for millions of people globally.
