Chios is a major Greek island located in the northern Aegean Sea.

It is the fifth largest island in Greece and the tenth largest in the Mediterranean Sea. The Chios Strait separates the island from the coast of Turkey. The island has a unique crescent or kidney shape. It is long from north to south.

The terrain is mostly mountainous and arid. A central ridge of mountains runs the entire length of the island. In the north, the two highest peaks are Pelineon and Epos.

A range of smaller peaks called Provatas divides the center of the island into east and west sections.

The climate on Chios is categorized as temperate Mediterranean. The surrounding sea has a stabilizing effect on the weather. This means there is modest variation in temperature throughout the year. Summer temperatures average a high of 30°C. In January, the average low is around 10°C. However, temperatures can sometimes drop below freezing or rise above 40°C. The island experiences steady breezes all year. These winds are often northerly, known as the Etesian or Meltemi. They can also be southwesterly, known as the Sirocco.

Chios is famous for the production of mastic gum. This specialty has earned the island the nickname "the Mastic Island."

In the southern region, there are seven specific villages called the Mastichochoria. These villages include Mesta, Pyrgi, Olympi, Kalamoti, Vessa, Lithi, and Elata. These settlements have controlled mastic production since the Roman period. The villages were built between the 14th and 16th centuries. They feature narrow streets and fortified gates. This design helped protect residents from frequent raids by pirates.

The history of Chios stretches back to the Neolithic era. Archaeological research shows people lived in cave dwellings at Hagio Galas. Excavations at Emporeio also show early human habitation.

By the 11th century BC, the island was ruled by a monarchy. It later transitioned to aristocratic or possibly tyrannic rule. During the Archaic and Classical periods, Chios was a member of the Ionian League. It was one of the first cities to mint its own coins. The sphinx was used as the official symbol on these coins.

The island also possessed significant naval power. During the Battle of Lade in 494 BC, the Chian fleet included 100 ships.

Chios has been ruled by many different powers over the centuries. In antiquity, it was known as Ophioussa or Pityoussa. During the Middle Ages, it was ruled by the Genoese and the Ottomans. The capital during those times was called Kastron. A very difficult period occurred during the Greek War of Independence in 1822. This event is known as the Chios massacre. During this time, tens of thousands of Greeks were killed, expelled, or enslaved by Ottoman troops.

Chios remained part of the Ottoman Empire until 1912.

Today, the island is a significant administrative and tourist destination. The main town is Chios, also called Chora. It has a population of 32,400 people. The town is built around a main harbor and a medieval castle.

The current castle was built during Genoese and Ottoman rule. However, remains of settlements there date back to 2000 B.C. The town suffered damage from an earthquake in 1881. Another important site is the Nea Moni monastery. This 11th-century monastery is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

It was built with funds from the Byzantine Emperor Constantine IX.

Chios also offers unique geological and cultural connections. Near Pyrgi, a type of white dirt is found. In antiquity, this was known as Chian earth. It was used as a cosmetic and an astringent. The island's name may come from ancient legends. One story says Chios was the son of the god Poseidon. Another story attributes the name to a nymph named Chione. Even the suburb of Vrontados has famous connections. Some believe it is the birthplace of the poet Homer.
