They sit along the east coast of Greece. You can find them northeast of a large island called Euboea. The name Sporades means "those scattered." This name describes how the islands are spread out in the water. These islands are also called the Thessalian Sporades.

They are a special part of the sea.

There are 24 islands in this group. Most of these islands have no people living on them. Only four islands are permanently inhabited. These four islands are Alonnisos, Skiathos, Skopelos, and Skyros. Other islands in the group include Kyra Panagia and Peristera. There are also smaller islands like Gioura and Skantzoura. Some islands, like Piperi and Tsougria, have no people at all.

People have used these names for a very long time. In Classical Antiquity, the name referred to island groups in the Aegean. These groups were outside the central Cyclades islands. Since 1960, the term "Sporades" has mostly meant these specific islands. There are actually five different groups of Sporades. These include the Western, Southern, Eastern, and Thracian groups. Each group sits in a different part of the sea.

Rules for how the islands are run changed in 2011. A reform called Kallikratis created the Sporades Regional Unit. This unit is part of the Thessaly region. It is divided into three main areas. These areas are Skiathos, Skopelos, and Alonnisos. The island of Skyros is part of a different group. It belongs to the Euboea regional unit. It is part of the Central Greece region.

Learning about the Sporades helps us understand how islands work. They show how land can be scattered across the ocean. You can see how different regions manage their islands. Some islands belong to Thessaly while others belong to Central Greece. This shows that one group of islands can have different leaders. The map shows where these islands sit in the wide sea.
