They sit in the Aegean Sea. This sea is near the coast of Greece. The islands are northeast of a large island called Euboea.

The name Sporades means "those scattered." This is because the islands are spread out in the water.

There are 24 islands in this group. Most of them have no people living on them. Only four islands have people. These are Skiathos, Skopelos, Alonnisos, and Skyros. These four islands are always inhabited.

These islands are part of a region called Thessaly. Some parts belong to the Sporades Regional Unit. This unit has three main areas. They are Skiathos, Skopelos, and Alonnisos. The island of Skyros is a bit different. It is part of the Central Greece region. It sits near the Euboea regional unit. It also has some small islands nearby that have no people.
