These islands have a very special history. For a long time, people from Venice ruled them. This was different from the rest of Greece. Because of this, the islands have many Italian influences. You can see this in their culture.

In 1864, the islands became part of Greece. Later, the British also ruled them for a while. The British brought new things like cricket and afternoon tea.

Life on the islands has changed over time. In 1953, a very strong earthquake hit. It damaged many buildings on Kefalonia and Zakynthos. People had to rebuild the islands from the ground up. Today, most people visit the islands for tourism. They come to see the beautiful cities and the sea.
