The Atlantic Ocean is the second largest ocean.

It covers about 17% of Earth's surface. The ocean has an S-shape. It sits between the Americas and Europe and Africa.

It connects to other oceans too. These include the Arctic and Indian oceans.

Under the water, there is a huge mountain range. We call this the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. This ridge divides the ocean into two halves. It rises up from the ocean floor. In some places, it reaches the surface. This creates volcanic islands like Iceland.

The water temperature changes in different spots. The South Atlantic stays warm all year. This is because it is near the equator. The North Atlantic has many seasons. It can be very hot or very cold.

People use the ocean for many things. Ships move goods across the water for trade. In the past, explorers like Christopher Columbus sailed here. He sailed in 1492. Today, the ocean is still a main part of world trade.
