The Makgadikgadi Pan is a huge area of salt flats. It sits in the dry savanna of north-eastern Botswana. This place is not just one single pan. Instead, it is many pans with sandy desert in between them. The largest parts are called Sua, Ntwetwe, and Nxai Pans.

This area is one of the largest salt flats in the world. It is part of the much larger Kalahari Basin.

Most of the year, the ground is a dry, salty crust of clay. The weather here is usually hot and dry. However, regular annual rains change how the land looks and feels. When it rains, the pans fill with water and grass. This creates a special home for many different animals. The Nata River helps bring water to the pans. This river is 330 kilometers long.

Long ago, this place looked very different. It was once the site of the enormous Lake Makgadikgadi. That lake was larger than the country of Switzerland. Many thousands of years ago, the lake dried up. It left behind relic shorelines that you can still see today. You can find these lines on Gidikwe Ridge. Some are at 3,100 feet and others are at 3,018 feet.

This region is very important for human history. Scientists found that modern humans might have first begun to evolve here. This happened about 200,000 years ago. Back then, the area was full of lakes, rivers, and grasslands. It was a very fertile place for living things. Archaeologists have even found very old stone tools here. These tools were made by people even earlier than modern humans.

Many animals visit the pans when the water arrives. You can see large groups of zebra and wildebeest. Migrating birds like ducks and great white pelicans also come here. The Sua Pan is a special place for pink flamingos. It is one of only two places in southern Africa where they breed. You might also see big baobab trees near the pans. These trees are famous landmarks in the landscape.
