Makgadikgadi Pan

geography Maturity 11-13 Next article →

The Makgadikgadi Pan is a massive system of salt flats located in the dry savanna of north-eastern Botswana. It is one of the largest salt flat regions on Earth. This area is not a single, continuous plain. Instead, it consists of many individual pans separated by sandy desert. The most prominent sections are the Sua (or Sowa), Ntwetwe, and Nxai Pans. These pans sit within the larger Kalahari Basin.

Geologically, the pans are the remains of the ancient Lake Makgadikgadi. Tens of thousands of years ago, this lake covered an area larger than the country of Switzerland. As the lake evaporated, it left behind a dry, salty clay crust. The process that formed this basin is not fully understood by scientists. Some researchers conjecture that a gentle down-warping of the Earth's crust occurred. This may have involved mild tectonics and associated faulting. The main axis of this developing graben, or a depressed block of the crust, runs from the northeast to the southwest.

Today, the landscape shows clear signs of its watery past through relic shorelines. These shorelines are most visible in the southwestern part of the basin. You can observe these ancient edges on Gidikwe Ridge, which lies west of the Boteti River. Some of these shorelines sit at elevations of 3,100 feet, while others are at 3,018 feet. Within the Sua Pan, there are even igneous rock "islands" known as Kubu Island and Kukome Island. Kubu Island is a protected national monument and contains several baobab trees.

This region holds immense importance for the history of life on Earth. Recent studies of human mitochondrial DNA suggest that modern Homo sapiens may have first begun to evolve here. This likely occurred approximately 200,000 years ago. During that time, the area was a vast, fertile wetland filled with lakes, rivers, marshes, and grasslands. Such an environment was highly favorable for evolving hominins and other mammals. Archaeological excavations have uncovered many stone tools in the pan. Some of these tools are so old they date back to a time before Homo sapiens existed.

The environment of the pans changes drastically with the seasons. The climate is generally hot and dry, but there are regular annual rains. Most of the year, the pans are a harsh, salty desert. During this dry season, only a thin layer of blue-green algae grows on the pans. However, the arrival of rain transforms the landscape into a refuge for wildlife. The Nata River, which is 330 kilometers long, provides a major water source. A smaller amount of water is also supplied by the Boteti River from the Okavango Delta.

When the pans fill with water, they support massive migrations of animals. Large populations of zebra and wildebeest visit the area. The pans also attract many migratory birds, such as geese, ducks, and great white pelicans. The Sua Pan is particularly vital because it hosts one of only two breeding populations of greater flamingos in southern Africa. The other population is located at Etosha in Namibia. In the dry season, the birdlife is much smaller, consisting mainly of ostriches and plovers.

While the pans are beautiful, they face several modern challenges. Commercial operations began extracting salt and soda ash from the Sua Pan in 1991. There are also plans to divert water from the Nata River for irrigation, which could damage the ecosystem. Tourism also brings risks, as quad bikes and off-road vehicles can disturb flamingo breeding colonies. Additionally, illegal hunting remains a persistent problem in the national parks. To help protect these areas, certain zones are managed as protected reserves, such as the Nata Sanctuary and the Makgadikgadi Pans Game Reserve.
