Life in the Namib works in a very clever way. Because there is so little rain, living things rely on fog.

This fog happens when the cold Benguela Current meets warm air. The fog rolls in from the ocean and covers the land. This provides a vital source of moisture for plants and animals. For example, the Welwitschia is a strange plant with two long leaves. It survives the heat by capturing moisture from the sea fog.

Some darkling beetles also use the fog to drink. One type of beetle lets droplets roll down its back to its mouth.

History shows how humans have lived alongside this dry land. Long ago, the San people roamed the desert. They hunted in the interior and gathered plants on the shore. They even drank juice from the tsamma melon for water. Today, the desert is mostly empty of people. A few groups like the Ovahimba and the Topnaar Nama still live there.

Some parts of the desert are protected by the laws of Namibia. Other areas are used for mining important things like diamonds and salt. This area near the Orange River is called the Sperrgebiet.

There are many interesting facts about the Namib's environment. The desert covers an area of about 800,000 square kilometers. It reaches from the Uniab River in the north to Lüderitz in the south. The weather can change a lot depending on where you stand. Near the coast, temperatures stay steady between 10 and 20 degrees Celsius. But further inland, it can get very hot in the summer. At night, the temperature can even drop below freezing.

The desert also has many different types of animals.

You might recognize some of the animals found in the Namib. Large animals like elephants and rhinos live in the northern parts. In the Namib-Naukluft National Park, you can see mountain zebras.

It has endured arid conditions for roughly 55 to 80 million years. Only the Atacama Desert in South America competes with it regarding age and aridity. The Namib is the only true desert in southern Africa. Most of the Namibian portion is protected by the country's constitution.

The desert's climate is driven by a specific interaction between air and water. The aridity is caused by the descent of dry air from the Hadley cell. This air is cooled by the cold Benguela Current along the coast. This interaction creates a thick fog belt that frequently envelops the desert. Coastal regions can experience more than 180 days of thick fog every year.

This fog is a vital source of moisture for many desert species. While the fog is helpful for life, it is a major hazard for ships. More than a thousand wrecks now litter the Skeleton Coast because of it.

The geography of the Namib changes as you move from the sea to the mountains. Near the coast, the geology consists of massive sand seas.

Some of these dunes are the second-largest in the world. In the Sossusvlei area, some dunes exceed 300 meters in height.

Further inland, the landscape shifts to gravel plains and scattered mountain outcrops. The desert gradually ascends in elevation toward the Great Escarpment. The sand in the Namib Sand Sea comes mostly from the Orange River. Geologists sometimes call this area the "wind displaced delta of the Orange River."

Temperature and rainfall vary significantly across different parts of the desert. The western Namib receives much less rain than the eastern side. The western regions receive about 5 mm of rain annually. In contrast, the eastern regions receive about 85 mm. Temperatures near the coast remain stable between 10 and 20 degrees Celsius. However, temperatures further inland are much more variable. Summer daytime temperatures can exceed 40 degrees Celsius. At night, temperatures can even drop below freezing.

Life in the Namib has adapted in remarkable ways to survive the dryness. Many species are endemic, meaning they are found nowhere else on Earth.

The Welwitschia is a famous endemic plant that acts like a living fossil. It grows two long, strap-shaped leaves that capture moisture from the fog. Insects like darkling beetles have also developed clever survival methods. One species, Onymacris unguicularis, uses its smooth back to collect fog droplets. These droplets then roll down to its mouth. Other beetles, like Lepidochora discoidalis, even build webs to capture water.

The fauna of the Namib includes both small and large animals. Most wildlife consists of arthropods and small animals that need very little water. However, larger mammals inhabit the northern regions and national parks. You can find lions, elephants, and rhinos near the Skeleton Coast. In the Namib-Naukluft National Park, mountain zebras live among the rocks.
