The physical appearance of the pan changes with the weather. Most of the time, the pan consists of dry clay. As this clay dries, it cracks into distinct hexagonal shapes.

When heavy rains occur, a thin layer of water covers the surface. This water is hypersaline, meaning it has a very high salt content. This salt comes from the mineral deposits on the surface. The water is usually quite shallow. In particularly good rainy seasons, the pan becomes a lake about 10 cm deep. Currently, the Ekuma, Nipelo, Cuvelai, and Omurambo Ovambo rivers are the only seasonal water sources. Much of this water seeps into the riverbeds before it reaches the pan.

Life in the pan is divided into different zones. The salt desert itself supports very little plant life. You might find blue-green algae, which gives the pan its unique color. You may also see grasses like Sporobolus spicatus. These grasses grow quickly in the wet mud after heavy rains. The hypersaline water supports specialized life forms. These include brine shrimp and extremophile micro-organisms. Extremophiles are organisms that can live in very harsh conditions, such as high salt levels.

In wet years, these conditions create a breeding ground for birds. Thousands of flamingos and great white pelicans arrive to use the shallow waters.

The area surrounding the pan is much more lush. Dense mopane woodland grows in the surrounding area. Mopane trees are common throughout south-central Africa. These trees host the mopane worm, which is the larva of the moth Gonimbrasia belina. The worm is an important protein source for local rural communities. The surrounding grasslands and savanna provide food for many large animals.

When water is available, thousands of mammals visit the pan and nearby waterholes. This includes zebra, wildebeest, gemsbok, springbok, and eland. You can also find black rhinoceros, bush elephants, lions, leopards, and giraffes.

Exploration of this unique region has a recorded history. During the colonial era, European explorers visited the area. Charles John Andersson and Francis Galton were the first non-Africans to explore the region in 1851. Their travels helped document this remote part of Namibia.
