The fruit is a multiple fruit that changes as it grows. It starts as white, green, or pale yellow. Then it turns pink or red while ripening. Finally, it becomes dark purple or black and tastes sweet.

Growing these trees involves a few different ways. You can grow them from seeds, which often makes for healthy trees. However, seeds can take up to ten years to produce fruit. Many people prefer using large cuttings because they root very easily.

Some people even use a method called grafting to change a tree. For example, you can graft a female branch onto a male tree. This can turn a male tree into one that does not produce pollen. This is helpful because male trees produce pollen that can cause allergies. Female trees instead draw pollen and dust from the air.

People have been using mulberries for a very long time. In the 17th century, black mulberries were brought to Britain. People hoped they would help with raising silkworms.

In the Middle Ages, the area of Greece called the Peloponnese was known as Morea. This name actually comes from the Greek word for the mulberry tree. Scientists have also found mulberry fossils in the Pliocene record of the Netherlands. This shows that these trees have been around for a long time. Even famous artists like Vincent van Gogh painted these beautiful trees.

Mulberries are found in many different places on Earth. The white mulberry is native to South Asia. It is now found in Europe, Africa, and North and South America.

In the United States, the red mulberry is native. However, the white mulberry is often seen as an invasive species there. This means it can take over land from native plants. In Australia, there are native mulberries, but many people also grow exotic ones in their backyards. The black mulberry is native to southwest Asia. It is also found in places like Iran and the Caucasus.

These trees are useful for many things we use every day. The most famous use is for the silk industry. The white mulberry is the only food for the silkworm.

These worms eat the leaves to make the silk used in clothes. People also use the stems to make paper. In Japan, traditional washi paper is made from mulberry parts. Some paper, called Tengujo, is the thinnest in the world. You can even find colors in the fruit called anthocyanins. These can be used as natural food colorants or dyes.
