The Moraceae family is a large group of flowering plants. People often call them the fig or mulberry family. This group includes about 48 different genera. There are also more than 1,100 different species in the family. Most of these plants live in warm, tropical regions. You can find them in subtropical areas too. Overall, they have a cosmopolitan distribution. This means they can be found all over the world.

These plants work in many different ways. Most species produce a fleshy fruit with seeds inside. The flowers are often quite small. Some flowers have petals or sepals, but not both. This is called being monochlamydeae. Many flowers also have parts called pistils and stamens in different flowers. This way of growing is called being diclinous. The shape of the stamen helps spread pollen. If the stamen is bent, the wind carries the pollen. If the stamen is straight, insects usually help.

Scientists have studied these plants for a long time. The fossil record for Moraceae goes back to the late Cretaceous period. Some studies suggest the family began to change and grow during the mid-Cretaceous. Major groups emerged later during the Tertiary period. Many fossil names exist for these old plants. Some names include Aginoxylon and Coussapoites. Others include Milicioxylon and Protoficus. These fossils help us see how the family grew over time.

There are many interesting facts about these plants. The family has huge differences in size. The Indian Banyan is a colossal tree. On the other hand, Dorstenia barnimiana is a tiny succulent. It is only 2 to 5 cm wide. These two plants have a massive difference in weight. One is about one billion times heavier than the other. Most species have milky sap in their soft tissues. They also have glands in their leaves that make latex.

You might already know many plants from this family. The common fig is a very famous example. You might also recognize the mulberry or the jackfruit. Another well-known plant is the breadfruit. These plants belong to a larger group called the Rosales. Recent studies moved them into this group. They are also part of a group called the urticalean rosids. This group includes other plants like the elm and the cannabis.
