It belongs to the mulberry and jackfruit family. This tree is very important to many people in tropical places. It is a staple food, which means it is a main part of many meals. The name comes from how the fruit feels when it is cooked. It has a texture like freshly baked bread. It can also taste a bit like a potato.

Learning how the tree works is quite interesting. The trees are monoecious, which means male and female flowers grow on the same tree. The male flowers pop out first. Shortly after, the female flowers appear. These female flowers can be pollinated in just three days. Fruit bats are the main animals that help with pollination. However, many trees grown by people produce fruit without needing pollination at all. The fruit grows from many small flowers that look like little hexagon disks on the skin.

History shows how the tree traveled across the world. Scientists believe the breadfruit was selectively bred in Polynesia. It came from a relative called the breadnut. Long ago, about 3,000 years ago, Austronesian voyagers carried it on canoes. They spread the plant to Micronesia, Melanesia, and Polynesia. Later, in the late 18th century, British and French sailors brought seedless varieties to the Caribbean. One famous explorer, Joseph Banks, even helped lead expeditions to move the plants.

There are many amazing facts about how these trees grow. A single tree can produce 200 or more fruits in one season. Most of these fruits are about the size of a grapefruit. In the South Pacific, a tree might yield between 50 and 150 fruits every year. These trees love warm, tropical weather and plenty of rain. They grow best in places that are not too high above the sea. They can even grow in sandy soil near the ocean. The tree is also useful for more than just food. The wood is light and sturdy, so people use it for houses and surfboards.

Today, you can find breadfruit in 90 different countries. It grows in places like South Asia, Africa, and Central America. People use it in many different ways depending on where they live. In the Philippines, it is used in savory dishes. In the Caribbean, people might fry it to make tasty snacks. Some cultures even bury the fruit in leaf-lined pits to preserve it for a long time. This creates a sour, sticky paste that can last for many years.
