It grows on tall, woody trees or shrubs. These plants like to grow in warm places. They also like to live in high, cool mountains. The name comes from a word meaning "cold seeds."

You can eat it with a spoon. The fruit has many hard, black seeds. Do not eat these seeds. They are poisonous if you crush them open.

Tiny beetles help the fruit grow. These are called nitidulid sap beetles.

The flowers change stages to grow fruit. First, the flower is female. Later, it becomes male. The beetles visit the flowers to move pollen. They eat tasty parts of the flower too. This helps the plant make new fruit.
