The pigeon pea works with tiny living things in the soil called Rhizobia. These bacteria live in small bumps on the plant's roots called nodules. The plant takes nitrogen from the air and gives it to the bacteria. In return, the bacteria help the plant grow and make the soil much richer. This makes the pigeon pea a great choice for farming in dry areas. It can grow well even when there is very little rain.

People have been growing these peas for a very long time.

Some experts believe they first grew in India by at least 2800 BCE. There are also ancient seeds found in Egyptian tombs from around 2200 BCE. The plant may have traveled from India to Africa through old trade routes. Later, it reached the Americas during the 17th century. In Hawaii, a man named James Macrae introduced the plant in 1824. It became very popular there later when people from the Philippines and Puerto Rico moved to the islands.

There are many interesting facts about how these peas are grown and sold.

Around the world, about 4.49 million tons of pigeon peas are produced each year. India is the biggest producer and grows about 63% of the total amount. Africa is the second largest area, contributing about 21% of the world's supply. In Africa, countries like Malawi, Tanzania, and Kenya are major producers. Some varieties of the plant can live for three to five years. Other types are grown as annuals just to make seeds.
