It belongs to the legume family, which means it grows in pods. These seeds are very important because they are high in protein. Many people around the world use them in their favorite meals. In the Middle East, they are a main part of hummus.

People also make falafel by grinding them with herbs and spices. In India, chickpeas are used in many delicious soups, stews, and curries.

In 2023, India was a huge producer of this crop. It accounted for 75% of all chickpeas grown in the world.

The chickpea plant has a very specific way of growing. It usually reaches a height of 20 to 50 centimeters.

The plant has small, feathery leaves on both sides of its stem. It also grows white flowers that might have blue, violet, or pink veins. Each seedpod on the plant holds two or three individual peas.

To help the plants grow bigger, farmers use nutrients like phosphorus and nitrogen. Phosphorus helps the plant grow taller as it matures. Nitrogen is also important, but too much of it can actually stop the plant from producing a good yield.

The oldest evidence shows they were cultivated about 10,000 years ago. This happened during the First Agricultural Revolution. Archaeologists found traces of chickpeas in ancient sites in Syria.

These early people grew them alongside wheat, barley, and lentils. Over many years, people used selective breeding to change the plants. They chose seeds that were large, easy to eat, and easy to separate from the pods. This helped create the different varieties we see today.

There are two main types of chickpeas that people grow. The first is called Desi, which is common in South Asia and Ethiopia.

Desi seeds are small and dark, sometimes appearing black or green. The second type is called Kabuli.

Kabuli chickpeas are larger and have a smooth, tan coat. They are mostly grown in the Mediterranean and Middle East regions. This variety was brought to India from Afghanistan during the 18th century. Scientists have even studied the DNA of 90 different types of chickpeas to learn more about them.

You might recognize chickpeas in many different foods at the store.

The name "chickpea" itself has a long history. It comes from old words that meant "pea" or "oat." Even the scientific name, Cicer arietinum, has a special meaning. The word "arietinum" comes from a word meaning a ram. This is because the shape of the seed looks a bit like the head of a ram.
