Fabales

life science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Fabales is a big group of flowering plants.

This group has many different plant families. Most of these plants belong to the Fabaceae family. We also call these plants legumes. This is the third largest plant family on Earth.

Scientists study the Fabales very closely. They study the Fabaceae because they are food plants. They are also very diverse. This means they have many different types. Other plants in the group are also important. Some plants in the Polygalaceae family are food for bugs. These bugs include moths and butterflies.

These plants grow in many places around the world.

Some parts of this group grow in the north. Scientists use special tools to study how they are related. This is called molecular phylogeny. This is a way to study plant history using tiny parts.

This group of plants is very old. They split from other plants a long time ago. This happened about 101 million years ago.

Some plant families in this group are still being studied. We do not know everything about them yet.
