Malpighiales

life science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

Malpighiales is a very large group of flowering plants. This group is very diverse. That means the plants look very different from each other. Some members are tall trees like poplars or rubber trees. Others are small plants like violets. You can even find the corpse flower in this group. Some plants in this group are tropical. Others grow in cooler places.

It is hard to group these plants by how they look. Instead, scientists use molecular phylogenetics. This is a way to study how plants are related by looking at their DNA. This study shows the plants belong together. Scientists think this group began about 90 to 100 million years ago.

There are about 36 families in this group. The largest family is called Euphorbiaceae. It has about 7,500 different species. Many plants in this group have leaves with tiny teeth.

Some plants in this group are very strange. The Rafflesia is a tropical plant that lives as a parasite. This means it gets what it needs from other plants. It can grow very big flowers.
